Council of the Federation Literacy Award
The Council of the Federation Literacy Award was created in 2004 by Canada's Premiers to recognize literacy achievements in every province and territory.
Amber Kidd of Edmonton, 2011 Recipient
Ms. Kidd had a desire to improve her employment situation to provide a better life for and to be a role model for her four children. She set her sights on becoming a heavy equipment operator but was stalled when she was unable to pass the math component of the entrance exam.
Ms. Kidd began an intense learning program with tutors from the Project Adult Literacy Society (PALS) in Edmonton. Her undaunted personal effort, despite many challenges, gave her the math literacy skills she needed to pass the entrance exam and enter to program that would allow her to reach her goals.
Thanks to her improved literacy skills, Ms. Kidd is not only employed as a heavy equipment operator but she is also able help her children with their homework and can apply her numeracy learning to her daily life.
Ms. Kidd was presented with the Literacy Award medallion at the Literacy & Learning Sympoisum in Calgary on October 20.
Congratulations to Ms. Kidd and all of the 2011 Council of the Federtation Literacy Award nominees!
