Province salutes talented students with more than half a million dollars in scholarships

Edmonton... Thirty-five hard-working Alberta graduate students have been awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships in recognition of exceptional academic achievement. The 2005 recipients of the Arts Graduate Scholarships, the Ralph Steinhauer Awards of Distinction and the Sir James Lougheed Awards of Distinction have each received an award to pursue advanced study at the master's or doctoral level.

This year's recipients are studying in a wide variety of fields, including clinical psychology, fine arts, electrical engineering and earth sciences. Eligibility for these awards is based on the applicant's level of education and whether he or she is studying in or outside of Alberta.

"Alberta's Advanced Education and Technology system is second-to-none, and the contributions made by graduate students are a major factor in the success of the system," said Advanced Education and Technology Minister Dave Hancock. "These scholarships are an incentive for students to work hard to maximize their potential for the benefit of themselves and the province as a whole."

Recipients of the Arts Graduate Scholarship must be Alberta residents and enrolled or planning to enrol in full-time study in music, drama, dance, or literary or visual arts at a master's or equivalent level. Each scholarship is worth $5,000 and can be used for study at any graduate faculty or equivalent institution around the world.

Recipients of the Ralph Steinhauer Award of Distinction must be Canadian citizens and enrolled or planning to enrol in full-time study in a graduate program at an Alberta institution. The value of each scholarship is $15,000 for study at the master's level or $20,000 for study at the doctoral level.

The Sir James Lougheed Awards of Distinction offer the same value of awards as the Ralph Steinhauer Awards of Distinction, but require each recipient to be an Alberta resident studying at an institution outside of Alberta.

More than $40 million in scholarships have been awarded to deserving Alberta students through Alberta Scholarship Programs in 2004/05. For more information about these and other scholarships available, visit alis.alberta.ca/scholarships
