September 27, 2005Alberta opens new international education office in Mexico
Guadalajara, Mexico... Mexican students now have better access to information about the post secondary learning opportunities available in Alberta because of a new Alberta international education office in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Advanced Education and Technology Minister, Dave Hancock, opened the office September 27, during his mission to Mexico. The opening was attended by the state of Jalisco's Secretary of Education, Luis G. Martinez, and representatives from 12 Alberta post-secondary institutions. Hancock and Martinez also signed an agreement renewing educational partnerships between the two regions.
"The Alberta government believes that international education is important and the direct experience of living and studying abroad provides an important opportunity for Albertans to develop the intercultural knowledge, skills, and abilities required now and into the future," said Hancock. "The new agreement shows the province's interest in collaborating internationally and recognition for the value of building relationships and learning more about the province's most important trading partners. All of these things enable Alberta to compete in the global marketplace and contribute to the world."
The office will be staffed by one person who will promote Alberta as an excellent place to study and will also offer support to Albertans studying in Mexico. The office is located near the Consulate of Canada.
"Alberta's post-secondary institutions offer the highest quality of education and services, and I am proud to be promoting them to the citizens of Mexico via this office," said Hancock. "Mexico is an important trading region for Alberta so creating a new agreement on education is timely. Having an educational presence in Guadalajara will better enable Alberta's institutions and businesses to promote education opportunities in Mexico."
In 2003, Mexico ranked ninth as a source country for international students studying in Alberta. In the same year, Alberta welcomed 246 Mexican students to study in programs of six months in length or greater.
